The Celestial Dog

A possible system of stellar alignments in Neolithic south-eastern Sicily

Three places in south-eastern Sicily — the Nymphaeum of Syracuse, the Anaktoron of Pantalica and the Scoglio dei Cani — lie along geographical axes that, in the epochs around 5000 and 4300 BC, correspond to the rising of Mintaka, Sirius and Betelgeuse. This page sets out the hypothesis, the method by which it has been tested and what remains to be verified.

What the research says, in brief

In south-eastern Sicily, three places bound up with water and rock lie on axes pointing towards the points on the horizon where, thousands of years ago, three very bright stars rose: Mintaka in Orion’s belt, Sirius and Betelgeuse.

The question the research asks is not whether those stars were visible — they were — but whether the arrangement of the three places across the territory can be the result of a choice rather than of chance. Answering it requires measurements, criteria declared in advance and a statistical comparison with random configurations.

The name comes from the figure the system traces and from the role of the dog in the myths of the area: a threshold animal, bound to passage, to water and to return.

Places, chronology, alignments and context

The three places

  • Nymphaeum of Syracuse — cave and spring on the slope of the Greek theatre, in a context of long-lasting use of water.
  • Anaktoron of Pantalica — structure on the Pantalica rock, within the gorge system of the Anapo and Calcinara rivers.
  • Scoglio dei Cani — coastal outcrop in the Syracuse area that closes the third vertex of the system.

Geographical axes and stars

The axes considered connect the three places to one another and towards the horizon. The azimuths are compared with the heliacal rising and with the rising of the reference stars — Mintaka, Sirius, Betelgeuse — calculated for the epochs considered, taking precession and the real horizon profile into account.

The reference epochs are around 5000 BC and 4300 BC. That choice is not free: it is constrained by the fact that stellar declinations change slowly and that only within determined windows does a given azimuth correspond to the rising of a given star.

Archaeological context

The Neolithic occupation of south-eastern Sicily, the relationship with springs and caves, and the long continuity of use of the sites form the context within which the hypothesis is to be assessed.

Mythological context

The dog as guardian of the threshold, the link with water and with passage, and the position of Sirius in the Mediterranean seasonal calendar form the symbolic framework of the research. This framework is interpretive and does not constitute archaeoastronomical proof.

Paper, preregistration, data, criteria and limits

Levels of evidence

Measured
  • Geographical position of the three places and azimuths of the axes connecting them.
  • Horizon profile used to calculate the risings.
Modelled
  • Stellar positions for the epochs considered, calculated with a precession model.
  • Distribution of random configurations used as a statistical comparison.
Hypothesis
  • The arrangement of the three places reflects a choice bound to the rising of Mintaka, Sirius and Betelgeuse.
Interpretation
  • The reading of the system as a canine figure and the connection with the role of the dog in threshold myths.
What would refute the hypothesis
  • An equivalent frequency of alignments in random configurations of comparable sites.
  • Archaeological datings incompatible with the epochs considered.
  • Azimuths measured with independent topographic instruments appreciably different from those used in the analysis.

Preregistration

The site selection criteria, the angular tolerances and the statistical tests were fixed before the analysis, so that the significance threshold cannot be chosen after the fact.

Methodology and statistical analysis

  • Inclusion and exclusion criteria for the sites.
  • Declared angular tolerance and its justification.
  • Statistical test employed and null hypothesis.
  • Negative control on a set of unrelated sites.

Declared limits

  • Intentionality cannot be demonstrated from geometric data alone.
  • The chronology of the sites is not uniform and must be specified site by site.
  • The number of points is small: statistics constrain, they do not prove.

Future verifications

  • Independent topographic survey of the three points.
  • Extension of the negative control to a wider sample.
  • Archaeological review of the phases of occupation.
